EU Treaty Adopted By Spanish Senate

July 16th, 2008 - Chris Marshall

Just over a month after the Irish No Vote on the Lisbon Treaty the Spanish Senate (the upper house of Spain’s parliament, the Cortes Generales, it is made up of 264 members, 208 of whom are directly elected by popular vote, with the other 56 being appointed by the regional legislatures), has adopted it.

Although it has still to be signed off by King Juan Carlos, Spain will become the 23rd member state to ratify the agreement. Of the 27, only Ireland held a referendum (England promised to but didn’t!!) which as I am sure you know rejected it (as would England I have no doubt!).

I don’t get it though. It needs all 27, Ireland have said no but it seems that French President Nicolas Sarkozy - who currently holds the rotating EU presidency - has reportedly said that Ireland must hold a second vote on the treaty. How does that work? We don’t like your vote so please vote again!!! Has he forgotten that France along with the Netherlands rejected the treaty as far back as 2005? Oh and add to that the fact that the Czechs have suspended their parliamentary ratification vote pending a constitutional court ruling and Poland’s President Lech Kaczynski has refused to ratify the treaty for the time being, calling it “pointless”.

It is dead guys! Get over it and move on why don’t you!!!!!
