El Gourmet Restaurant

April 21st, 2008 - Sandra Marshall

Thank you to Alex Adamson-Leigh for this review of El Gourmet. This is a restaurant that I have been to but not for a number of years, but after reading this and having a chat, I can feel a visit coming on, certainly next time we want a special meal.

On Sunday together with some Dutch friends we had lunch at El Gourmet in the square in Almerimar. We were warmly welcomed by the co-owner and served aperitifs of fino sherry and gin and tonic. As a starter we shared a plate of excellent Mangalica ham and the house salad. We all had fish with two of us enjoying cod wrapped in salmon and caramelised onion sauce.. I had fillet of dorado cooked in a spicy sauce and the remaining main course was prawn and mero (grouper) sautéed in a light curry sauce with pineapple and banana. All delicious, well cooked and beautifully presented. We had a couple of bottles of excellent 1999 Reserve Rioja red and the usual accoutrements of pan, tortilla and agua sin gas. The ambiance was lovely and although there was a major celebration party in the outside part of the restaurant the service was first class. That we didn’t leave until 5.45pm confirms our enjoyment of the meal. The meal cost €160 including tip which I feel represented great value for money.

Sounds great and as I understand the excellent 1999 Rioja accounted for around 50 euros of the bill, defenitely good value for that type of meal.
