Dollars Not America

January 30th, 2008 - Sandra Marshall

I actually like visiting America. The summer we switched our base from the UK to here in Almerimar, Chris got a new contract which meant that we were spending half our time over in the US in 6 week blocks. Although I did get tired of all the travelling, the US, in all its commercialism, was a perfect contrast to our time spent here. I love the big gyms, movie houses and of course the opportunities to shop! So much of the stuff I like to buy from cosmetics to running shoes is cheaper over there and even more so now that the dollar is so weak.

SO now should be a good time to travel to the states, apart from the fact that what I thought were already pretty tight security methods, involving removing lots of items of clothing for one, are about to get tighter:

“British travellers to the United States face tighter security checks because Washington increasingly regards Europe as a ”platform” for a terror attack.”

That was the not so good news. The other article I read recently was talking about ways to benefit from the dollar exchange rate without leaving home:

“Currency movements, especially with the US dollar, have prompted many expats to start taking advantage of the ways they can benefit from favourable exchange rates on their accounts.”

Expat Investors

I have to be honest, I am doing neither at the moment. Having done loads of travel in recent years, I am happy to stay put at home in Almerimar for a while, and my preference to playing with currency movements is just to continue shopping in America, without having to go there. It does help if you have in-law who live in Florida half the year, and friends. I have found pick-ups in the UK and even postage from the US is much cheaper than a plane ticket to America, and the savings are very good at the moment!

So, whilst I miss Florida, especially in January and February, and now have to wait for the movies to come out on Sky, I have substituted the Internet and Airmail for Niketown and Macys!

About Almerimar

Almerimar is located in the region of Andalucia, Spain. The nearest airport is 30km away in Almeria. Other airports that are within 3 hours include Malaga, Murcia, Granada, and Alicanti. Other holiday resorts in the region include Mojacar , Aguadulce and Roquetas de Mar

Almerimar is a great place to live as an expat amongst the expats, or to work amongst the Spanish. There are all kinds of properties including villas, apartments and town houses for rent or sale. It is a very traditional part of Spain, with traditional Spanish foods so if you plan to travel to Spain either to look for jobs, for your company to trade with companies in Spain, or to learn Spanish and enjoy the Spanish weather then come and take a look.

Almerimar is also one of the largest marinas in Spain with over 2,000 births and excellent boatyard facilities.
