Dinner Last Night In Al-rruz

February 27th, 2009 - Chris Marshall

The theme of the dinners that we have set up with Al-rruz on Thursday evenings is ‘Taste of Spain’, as one objective was to try and give us ‘expats’ a chance to try out some more traditional Spanish food at an affordable price.

Well last night was a excellent example of this working brilliantly!

Looking at the menu I knew that the Stewed Pinto Beans would be nice, and indeed they were as Sands verified when she ordered them:

I was slightly less sure about the ‘Sopa Castellana’ (Castellana Soup with embezzled egg), but ordered it anyway and really enjoyed it. ‘Embezzled egg’ is a poached egg, and the soup was very similar in style to a Won Ton soup, but without the spice. It was very good indeed!

As for the main course we have both had enjoyed the Pernil Asado many times so it didn’t qualify as ‘trying something new’, plus we decided a while back to always try the fish on the Thursday night as we don’t bother to cook it at home that much.

The mackerel in pickling brine (soused) served with boiled potatoes sounded and looked intriguing, and tasted great. Slightly strange having cold fish with warm potatoes, but the taste and texture of the fish was great. I have a ‘thing’ about the texture of fish, too soft and I can’t eat it, and as for bones …..

Sands had her ‘usual’ cheesecake and I had the chocolate mousse again, to round off a very enjoyable meal.

We were both tired, and having been out for the previous three nights I for one wanted a quiet night, so just the one glass of wine. Was a bit windy but we still walked there and back, and all in all had a very enjoyable ‘taste of Spain’

There were 16 people eating last night, and a further 15 people drinking at the bar, so it was busy but not as packed as previous evenings.
