Overcrowded England

January 6th, 2008 - Sandra Marshall

This article is not really about life abroad but highlights what may be a big reason why so many Brits are currently choosing to leave: The British Emigrating. According to official figures England is about to become the most crowded country in Europe, with only Malta having a higher population density.

Expat Pensions Abroad

December 15th, 2007 - Sandra Marshall

I found this a really comprehensive article, clarifying the pension situation for expats who retire abroad. All seems to be well within the EEA (European Economic Area), but as outlined in previous articles, outside the EEA things are a little more problematic.

“Expats may have left British shores either temporarily or permanently, but there are still some state benefits you may be entitled to. The most common one is the state pension - if you have moved abroad and have already reached state pension age, then this will continue to be paid to you.”

Long-distance Grandparenting

December 3rd, 2007 - Sandra Marshall

Although not a parent myself I found this a very positive article discussing the issues of being a long distance grandparent, because either yourself or your family are living abroad.

It is particularly interesting in that the main character, Peter, is an 80 year old who is in the process of developing a book and Web site on the subject so that others can help from mutual experiences, and also that he is working closely with a mother (Anne) who sees the problem from the other side. This proves that you are never too old to embrace change and take up new things.
