Cabo de Gata on Fat Boy

August 29th, 2008 - Chris Marshall

Parked Up For Lunch

Last week I had an extremely pleasant day out with Chris & Kris on the bikes. What started out as a ‘couple of hours’ (to quote Kris), turned into 6 hours and a Paella lunch!!!

As I recall the original plan was to pop along to Cabo de Gata to shoot some video of the ride along the coast, and grab some photos for their site. I was to be the photographer and Kris was going to be the video guy with his helmet mounted camcorder …… which is very cool indeed.

Chris was going to do what Chris does best ……. head down, follow me, ask no questions leadership!!!

First blip on the day was the flat battery on the Fat Boy, despite having been on trickle charge for 2 days. Got it jump started with some help from Kris and was smart enough to take the leads and screwdrivers with me. Thankfully they weren’t needed.

Second blip on the day was that Kris picked up an insect bike at some stage, and as I was following him at the time I was treated to some pretty erratic riding as he tried to ease the pain. (Kris tends to have allergic reactions to bites etc and the next day he was really struggling).

Third blip was the totally crap driving by the Spanish!!!! Kris in particular seemed to get picked on, but at one stage both Chris & Kris had to hit the brakes pretty sharp as a driver just stopped in the middle of the rad to let a passenger out …… total idiot!!!!

Fourth blip was the slight sunburn to my arms as I hadn’t really prepared for that length of time in the sun.

On the positive side of the equation:

1. Brilliant riding conditions and company. Chris & Kris were a joy to ride with. when you are all of a similar standard and attitude i.e. fast riding but not mad riding, with safety the number one priority riding in a group can’t be beaten. We stopped for a beer at a beach bar just the other side of Almeria on the way up, and you could tell we were having fun by the universal bikers grin across all our faces.

2. The route. Riding along the cost into and out of Almeria is spectacular, but not quite as good as the riding through Caba de Gata which is a perfect combination of mountains and coastal roads.

3. The Paella. Wasn’t planned, but we stopped off at a beach restaurant in Caba de Gata that was packed with locals and it just seemed the right thing to do. Couple of beers, a lot of water and a seafood Paella for three …….. perfect.

Has made me realise that we don’t use the Fat Boy anywhere near enough, and I really do need to get the Road King Classic back to Almerimar as it is by far the best bike for touring and for Sands and I to use. Chris says he can get it shipped down for £400 which is cheaper than it would cost to fly back and ride it down so I may just get my mind around that in the next couple of weeks!!!!

    Well put that way!!!!!

One beer, a little food, and plenty of water. The main point being that we knew we had had a beer, and took extra care afterwards.
