Buying English style food in and around Almerimar

January 19th, 2008 - Chris Marshall

In this article Jacqui shares with us some of her food fetishes. Well OK she doesn’t got that far but she does give some food for thought ……

Having moved over here some time ago we have settled in to more of a Spanish diet rather than an English one. However, there are some English foods we still enjoy so here is our brief guide to what we buy where in and around Almerimar.

This article was inspired by the wonderful bacon butties we made this morning.

Our most regular purchase of an English style food is fresh pasturised milk. We have not got into the habit of buying the cartons of sterilised milk as we don´t like the taste on our cereals and in our hot drinks. Mercadona sells 1 litre cartons of semi-skimmed milk that it very close to what we had in England.

For cereals we tend to buy muesli and cornflakes in Lidl and Spanish versions of something like Special K and Bran Fibre in Mercadona. We are also very partial to Weetabix which you can get in both Mercadona and Copo.

Our real treat is an occasional bacon sandwich with Lea & Perrins or HP Brown Sauce. The only place we have found something similar to back bacon is in Mercadona. The sauces we think we get from Copo but we don’t buy them that often so we are not certain.

We like jacket potatoes but buying potatoes in supermarkets is a bit hit and miss as you have to buy 3 or 5 kilo packets with a mixture of sizes of potato. However, you can buy potatoes loose in the fruit and veg shop next door to Mercadona or you can go to the regular Wednesday morning market in El Ejido, which I know Sands has written about before.

There are a few items that we get brought over here for us by visitors. These include PG Tips tea bags, Marmite for myself (John doesn’t like it) and water biscuits.

If you have any queries about where you can find particular foods or recommendations about where to shop then please comment here.

Good to see the Bacon Sandwiches and HP Sauce Combination, but what other combinations float your boat? Personally I am a fan of:

Pork Pie and English Mustard

Marmite - love it or hate it? I love it, Sands loves it and so does Moreno. Haven’t tried Saidi on it yet but when I do will let you know.

I definitely love marmite too, also English marmalade (although HERO orange marmalade isn’t bad), and peanut butter on toast. The latter comes from the UK along with my Twinnings decaf Earl Grey!

Jacqui is a peanut butter freak as well. Sometimes she even has peanut butter and marmite sandwiches - horrible.

You can get peanut butter (crema de cacahuete) in Copo. The make is Capitán Mani and it comes in crispy (crujiente) with a blue lid and smooth (possibly suave but Jacqui likes the crunchy so we don´t have a jar to check the info) with a red lid I think.

It is low down on the shelf possibly near the jams and before the drinks in the aisle towards the meat area. It took us a long time to find a source of it here.

  4. Sandra Marshall Says:

Yep crunchy is best AND I will check it out HOWEVER I only started liking peanut butter when my veggie health freak sister gave me some of hers: 97% peanuts and no sugar added, just oil!

  5. Chris Marshall Says:

Ah, you seem to be forgetting the attempt at making it at home :-)

  6. Sandra Marshall Says:

I think best forgotten don’t you?!!!
