   Yet again the Scottish community in Almerimar is staging a Burns Night Supper. Burns Night Suppers are held around the world on January 25 to commemorate the birthday of the Scottish bard. Things are no different in Almerimar where an event has been organised to be held at El Espigon restaurant on the West promenade. A three-course traditional menu of soup, haggis, tatties and neeps and followed by desert will be served, along with whisky for the gravy and the toasts and red or white wine.

   The meal starts off with the tradional Address to the Haggis. After the meal there will be toasts to the Immortal Memory of Robert Burns, a toast to the lassies and the lassies response. While following the traditional format, the event does not take itself quite as seriously as some of those held in Scotland! Afterwards there will be a 60s and 70s style disco with the occasional Scottish dance thrown in.

   This will be the third time such an event has been held at El Espigon - a move than enabled the organisers to increase the numbers to 60 people - and the 12th time it has been held in Almerimar. The first few were in the ‘yachties clubhouse’ which used to be a feature of marina life in the boatyard. Later it moved to Maresqueria Frank, where the organisers took over the kitchen to prepare the food.

   “At El Espigon we gave the chef a crash course in Scottish cooking,” explained Mary Colson, “while some incredulity was shown at first about what we expected, they do an excellent job for us.”

   And for those that cannot stand the thought of eating haggis, there is an alternative available providing it it booked in advance. There is also a vegetarian option.

   Tickets cost 28 Euros each - a price that includes half a bottle of wine and whisky for the gravy and toasts. Reservations are necessary and can be made at Alamar Chandlery in calle Varadero, with a 10 Euro deposit.
