British Brain Drain

February 22nd, 2008 - Sandra Marshall

I’ve written before about how much we now enjoy life here in Almerimar. Of course there are things that I miss (although Chris will say not for him!) but our overall quality of life is much better. This view was echoed in an article I posted about in January, about how much happier most expats seem to be living abroad and how few regret the move. If you missed that article please click below:

Happy Expats In Spain

Yesterday I read another article in the UK press about what they call the:

Biggest brain drain from UK in 50 years

Research has shown that there are now 3.2 million British-born people living abroad, of whom more than 1 million are highly skilled – doctors, teachers, engineers etc. It appears that Britain is losing way more of its most skilled citizens than any other nation, about 10%. The big concern appears to be the cost of training these people (250,000 for a junior doctor) that is being lost.

So where are all these happy expats living?

“The most popular destinations are English-speaking countries such as Australia, America, Canada and New Zealand and holiday areas including France and Spain.”

Of course a lot of the highly skilled, career-minded, Brits are going to the first 3 destinations, but for retirees and those looking for a more relaxed or different lifestyle, Spain continues to come pretty high up the list, and the more I hear about internet businesses and working remotely, the more possible it seems to be to work from anywhere.

For me, it is so much better sitting at my Mac with a view of the sea and mountains than of buildings all around, AND even when I am not outside, almost constant sunshine is definitely a spirit lifter.

Although it took me slightly longer than Chris to ‘let go’ of my life in the UK, I can now confidently recommend living in Spain, and if you are looking to come here, Almerimar definitely has its charms.

About Almerimar

Almerimar is located in the region of Andalucia, Spain. The nearest airport is 30km away in Almeria. Other airports that are within 3 hours include Malaga, Murcia, Granada, and Alicanti. Other holiday resorts in the region include Mojacar , Aguadulce and Roquetas de Mar

Almerimar is a great place to live as an expat amongst the expats, or to work amongst the Spanish. There are all kinds of properties including villas, apartments and town houses for rent or sale. It is a very traditional part of Spain, with traditional Spanish foods so if you plan to travel to Spain either to look for jobs, for your company to trade with companies in Spain, or to learn Spanish and enjoy the Spanish weather then come and take a look.

Almerimar is also one of the largest marinas in Spain with over 2,000 births and excellent boatyard facilities.
