Breakfast in Almerimar
April 6th, 2008 - Chris MarshallJust back from breakfast (yes I know it is 3pm, but that is the way it goes sometimes) and thought I would write about the various breakfasts that you can get here in Almerimar.
Personally I have never been a big eater of breakfasts. I need to have been up and about for a couple of hours before my body can accommodate food, but from time to time I do like a ‘fry up’ or brunch.
Tostada & Coffee
I would say that this accounts for 80% of the breakfasts that we eat out, and is what I perceive the ‘usual’ Spanish breakfast to be. Simple and satisfying it comprises a freshly baked tostada (half or whole) lightly toasted with butter and marmalade, or tomato and ham, or maybe cheese and tuna, with a cup of freshly brewed coffee. Generally speaking the tostada is white although you can get a brown (integral) one in some places (Cafe Milenio comes to mind).
Typically we will eat this for breakfast on a Sunday morning reading the papers at Cafe H@cker, where we will happily spend a couple of relaxing hours chatting, reading, watching the world go by, all the time surrounded by the constant buzz of Spanish chatter which is such a integral part of the whole Cafe culture.
The Continental
A more substantial ‘traditional’ breakfast can be found in places like Cafe Milenio and Cafe Noray, and would ‘typically’ comprise of fresh orange juice and coffee, a croissant or pastry, and a tostada with cheese and ham for example.
I know that John & Cynthia who won a breakfast for two at Cafe Milenio in the recent Treasure Hunt enjoyed the one that they had this week, and there is a group of English friends who go there most Sundays.
As neither Sands or I really eat that much bread and are not big ‘pastry’ fans it isn’t something that we partake in, plus I tend to think of hame and cheese as a lunch or dinner ingredient not breakfast. Personally I have never really got on with the concept of a continental breakfast.
The Full English
Ah, who doesn’t like a full English every now or then? Or if you are at La Plaza a ‘mini’ English for those with a smaller appetite, or who are watching the calories.
There are a number of places to get a ‘Full English’ in Almerimar, that range from the ‘pile it high, keep it cheap’ option that is perfect for the hangover cure, or maybe a breakfast before heading home for the night (well morning) after one of the infamous all nighters that Almerimar can suck you into from time to time! to the higher quality, well presented breakfast like the one that we have just enjoyed at La Plaza.
And yes, before you say anything, we did get the free drink that is exclusive to readers of the site!

And no, I am not saying this just because they ‘advertise’ with us. That is one reason why we do not charge for advertising, it doesn’t compromise our ability to say what we think. It could be awkward to criticise a paying advertiser so a) we don’t charge and b) we only accept advertisements off businesses that we use and are happy to recommend (hence the readers offers). Woops got a little off topic there ….
So back to the Full English, 2 fried eggs, 2 sausages, bacon, beans, tomatoes, mushrooms, toast for 7.50€ from the ‘build your own’ option is what I went for, while Sands enjoyed the mini breakfast of scrambled egg, bacon, toast, mushrooms and tomatoes for 4.95€.
Spent a couple of hours in the sun shine, talking to some friends that we met, enjoying the perfectly cooked food.
Another ‘English’ option that we (well I) participate in from time to time is a Bacon Baguette from La Bahia. 3.50€ for half a fresh baguette with 3 rashers of bacon, it is a favourite breakfast place of one of our clients here so a mid week breakfast meeting usually starts with a Bacon Baguette!
The Ultimate Breakfast
Of course nothing beats the breakfast that I cook from time to time …….. Scrambled Eggs, Smoked Salmon, Bacon, Tomatoes, Mushrooms, Brown Toast and fresh coffee. More of a winter treat it is awesome, but you will have to take my word for it as I do not take bookings!!!
The Missing Breakfast
I think the only thing that I miss from time to time is the mini American breakfast i.e. a muffin and a Latte, or a bagel with smoked salmon and cream cheese, so if anybody fancies adding that to their menu I will be very grateful!
Please feel free to comment on your breakfast of choice, and where you tend to eat breakfast in Almerimar.
