Blue Flag Beaches

June 4th, 2008 - Chris Marshall

We were discussing Blue Flag beaches last night, and the fact that this year the Almería cost has lost 5 flags, reducing the number of beaches that qualify for a Blue Flag to 10. It dawned on me that I didn’t really know what the Blue Flag was, which isn’t a surprise as the amount of stuff that I don’t know about Spain is immense, but this time I have actually done something about it!!

First though here is a list of the ten (10) beaches in Almería that qualify for a Blue Flag:

  • Marina de la Torre and Venta del Bancal in Mojácar
  • San José in Níjar
  • La Bajadilla and Urbanización Roquetas in Roquetas
  • Levante-Almerimar, Poniente-Almerimar and Guardias Viejas in Almerimar
  • San Nicolás and Censo in Adra

If you want to see the whole list for Spain then you can download the Relación De Playas Galardonadas Con La Bandera Azul 2008 here

So what is a Blue Flag?

From what I can gather it is a a non-profit association that develops programs Fee (Blue Flag, Ecoescuelas, Key green forests in school) in Spain. These are programs that rely on sustainable development criteria, information and environmental education, in areas as diverse as beaches, ports and schools. It is run by the Asociación de Educación Ambiental y del Consumidor (ADEAC) , and you can see their web site here

From what I can gather the flag is awarded for distinctions in the thematic areas of information and enviromental education etc. which really seems to mean it has to be a clean, well kept, environmentally friendly beach.
