Beach Rugby This Weekend
August 17th, 2007 - Chris MarshallIf you haven’t been down to the beach rugby in previous years then this year you should make the effort, as it is a really good event that has got better over the years! Not only has the number of teams increased, but the quality of the rugby has improved and what can be said about the social aspect?
El Ejido Rugby Club is about 4 years old this season. When he lived here a good friend (Kev) coached them and introduced them to the various ways of the world Rugby style. I can vouch for the fact that they were good learners and have continued with their education. Kev will be bringing over his team from Burnley again - 40 I think was the number that he mentioned last time we spoke, so “lock up your daughters” as they say.
The following information comes with the ‘usual’ warning - it is subject to change on the basis that this is Spain and alcohol will be consumed.
This year there are 12 teams:
Combinado de Granada
Axarquia, CR
San Roque, CR
Jaen CR (A)
Jaen, CR (B)
Costa de Almeria(A)
Costa de Almeria(B)
Burnley
Os Finos(Santander)
Madrid
Carboneras
El Ejido Rugby, CR
There will be a minimum of two women teams (one from Carboneras and one from Granada) and they are expecting at least another one from Málaga.
All the games will be played on Saturday except the kids and maybe “old glories” who will play on Sunday.
The games will start at 10:00 until 13:00 and then from 16:30 to finish.
The welcome party starts tonight with a Argentinian BBQ for the teams arriving today.
On the Saturday evening there will be a BBQ for all members of the teams on the rugby pitch along the beach, with the other half of the pitch set aside for a camp site for the teams.
Other than a hangover, the kids game and some food, there are no plans for the Sunday.
Hope to see you there!
