Almerimar Strays Update
May 5th, 2008 - Sandra Marshall
Anyway who read my previous article: ‘Lucky Little Pepe’ will be please to know that this little chap that we rescued from the street with half his poor little tail bitten off is doing extremely well.
As he was so tame we were able to pick him up and take him straight up to Casa de los Gatos. The latest report is that he has already been nuetered, has had his injections, is very friendly, and there should be no problem finding him a home. This is great news as he was gorgeous and if I hadn’t already got 2 cats I would have been tempted myself. I am just so pleased that he turned up when he did so that we could help him. I think Mary, who is holding him in the next picture, may also have been tempted but her heart has already gone to another stray, our beautiful but rather wild siamese Monty!

The last picture I took is of another cat my friend had taken to Casa de los Gatos for re-homing. He was just about to go to Germany, and from being rather nervous of other cats seemed to have adapted really well to being surrounded by at least 30! I loved him sharing the water bowl with this tiny white kitten!

In addition to helping little Pepe we have managed to arrange for Pam of the Bahia to have 3 of her rescue dogs sterilised at a great price via the dog rescue home, and this is being paid for out of the treasure hunt money.
The rest of the money is pretty much allocated, but it is taking a little longer than anticipated to catch some of the lucky recipients! I am currently bribing some very feral kittens with boiled ham, and have got one of them eating out of my hand. The next step is to try again to grab him, so wish us luck for tomorrow.
One thing we are taking very seriously is our relationship with Casa de los Gatos. Gisela is a lovely lady but we understand is inclined to take on too much, as she hates to turn away any needy cat. Any animals that we take to her we will be keeping in touch with, as we understand that some feral cats are very difficult to tame, and would never be able to be re-homed. It is really important that the problems we have with strays here in Almerimar don’t become Gisela’s long term problems. We are also ensuring that every cat we take to her goes with a donation of at least a 3 month’s supply of food in addition to the money Gisela asks for to cover all the various vets bills. This will be coming from the kind people who are already feeding them, as true to the information given out prior to the treasure hunt, all the funds are going towards sterilisations and re-homing.
We are very keen to catch the beautiful siamese Monty over the next couple of weeks. He will go to Gisela for vet treatment and we will leave him with her for few weeks to see if he progresses well. But for him if he remains wild there is the offer of a home outdoors up in the hills as an alternative. If anyone has a big garden near to Almerimar and could provide a safe outdoor environment for some stray kittens in the future we would love to hear from you, and you don’t even have to commit to feed them!
