Almerimar Life Readers Question – Week Two
November 17th, 2008 - Chris MarshallHere is our second Readers Question from Tracy:
Loved the Technology Behind Almerimar Life post you did. Am thinking of getting into blogging but have no where near that amount of technology. What do you suggest I need as a minimum?
Great question!
First up you don’t need anything like the amount of technology that we have! Remember that I do this for a living, so I am always blogging for my own sites and clients sites so I have a variety of needs to serve on an ongoing basis. Plus I am a ‘technology junkie’ so am prone to go a bit OTT at times!
The answer really depends on what type of blog you want to run and why you want to run it. For example if you fundamentally want to offer a community news service and effectively be an aggregator of existing information all you really need is a computer, internet access and a host for your site.
If on the other hand you want to have a blog to showcase your videos then things get a bit more complicated! Of course you will need a video camera that is good enough to capture high quality audio and video BUT isn’t going to swallow up all your bandwidth and take an age to upload. A lot of this can be managed via some good post production software but if you don’t have the time, skill, money or patience for that then you need a video camera that will allow you to capture the video in a ‘friendly’ format.
The same applies to a camera. If you are a photographer and want to establish a site for your photos you will need a good camera and post processing software, but if you just want to show some snaps then pretty much any Point & Shoot will do. If you want to process the photos and edit them etc just make sure that you can shoot in RAW which is now an option with some of the high end Point & Shoot stuff.
The actual technology required to blog is really very low, and it can be extremely cheap and fulfilling as a hobby or past time. If you want to offer a professional blog either for commercial gain or personal pride then the sky is pretty much your limit as far as technology goes.
One of the great things about blogging is that you can start and let it evolve over time as your content and confidence grows.
Back to the technology ………
I would start off with a high quality mobile phone. These days the inclusion of a camera, video and audio capture, 3G internet access and the ability to install applications makes them a great bloggers friend. Of the two that we use I would say that the Nokia N95 is the best at this moment of time as it has a good camera, will capture reasonable quality video that can either be emailed via 3G or WiFi to, saved and transferred to your computer via bluetooth or USB or streamed to QIK if you use that service. It doesn’t have the applications that the iPhone has for blogging like Wordpress and note taking but the iPhone wont store captured video and needs a hack to stream Video. It also has an inferior camera, so overall for content capture the N95 is best and as that is what you need to do initially it would get my vote.
For me that would be the minimum, a god all round phone, a computer, Internet access and a host service.
Good luck and if you do set up a blog let me have the details.
