Almerimar Life Readers Question – Week 5

December 8th, 2008 - Chris Marshall

Here is our fifth Readers Question from Mary:

You seem to get a lot of comments overall, but posts that I thought would get a lot of comments don’t and vice versa. Can you explain that?

No!!! Actually I can explain it to some extent but if I (or any blogger) knew the answer then every post would generate loads of comments. A lot depends on the type of comment that you are after, and that in turn depends on the profile of reader the blog attracts. I have a theory that people allocate a certain amount of time to reading and commenting on a site, and if the post is really long and complex there seem to be less comments than for example a really short one on, say, last nights TV Soap Opera!

Personal style posts like the recent Orla post will generally get a lot of comments IF you have a large readership that are interested in your lifestyle and feel that they have bonded with you through the blog.

Informative posts about a specific situation like the effect of the hauliers strike on Almerimar attract a large number of comments if they answer a specific question for a large enough number of people.

And of course people love a bit of a scrap, so when a large organisation picks on a smaller guy like InSpainTV did with me your readers will tend to jump to your defense, but only if you are right and they agree with the way you have handled the situation. I guess the Foro found this out recently as well.

On the other hand I can post a really well researched, detailed post like the recent Murtas post and get hardly any comments (although ironically the one I did get was the first and only one from that reader), although the recent places and their history post did pretty well.

As you say the site does pretty well and in general we get a comment or two on every post which shows the strength of the community that we have built, the large number of readers (it is horrifying the ratio of readers to comments for a blogger by the way!), and the relevance of what we post. One thing I do know is that if you write trying to generate comments you will fail. It has to be a natural inclination to comment for the reader, rather than making feel obligated to comment. People will comment if they want to, so a competition is a good way of generating comments, or asking for a specific opinion on something can work but at the end of the day people are reading your blog to see what you have to say, not because they have anything to say!

Thought you had forgotten me!!!! Thanks for answering my question. It does make sense what you say. Seems like you are doing a good job compared to other sites that I am aware of.

I think it is because a lot of your content you obviously think about and take time creating.

Interesting. Hadn’t really thought about it to be honest, but it does make sense. You do seem to have an increasing core of people that comment and more ‘one off’ commenters than before I have noticed.
