Almerimar Life: 46 Today
July 31st, 2009 - Chris MarshallI am 46 today! Feel about 66 still think I am 26 so I guess confused would be one way of describing how I feel. Another would be frustrated, not so much at the fact that I am 46 today, but at how quickly the years seem to go by these days, and at how little I have achieved of my plans when we moved to Spain!
It has turned out to be a very reflective month indeed. The de cluttering project started it all off really, as it started me thinking on why we have so much stuff, how overcomplicated life has become these days, how much we do is driven by the wrong reasons: fear of failure, peer pressure, pre conceived ideas of conformity etc. Who would have thought emptying some shelves of old junk would have had that effect eh? Then I went and posted the photograph of me aged 18 , 185lbs, muscle definition. not an ounce of fat, and a body that despite two knee operations when I was 14/15 worked brilliantly. Now here I am, at least 30lbs heavier than then, a body that after 6 operations on my left leg, 1 on my shoulder, and 2 others takes about an hour to get moving in the morning, and means that my running days are well and truly over, so no jogging, football, tennis ……. well certainly no more than one jog a week and maybe a very occasionally game of tennis at some time in the future.
Aged 46 – can’t complain at all!
Now before you think I am depressed I am not at all. I am extremely lucky to be living here in Almerimar with Sands and the 3 cats; Moreno, Saidi and Oscar. I love the place, the option to ride the Harley’s every day, the fact that I can cycle along the beach most days, and the unbeatable climate are all a blessing.
I have written before about the need to integrate more, learn Spanish, and get fitter, and it isn’t too difficult to figure out that to date I have failed. But ….. a side benefit of the de cluttering project has been a general de cluttering of a number of associated issues:
- streamlined the technology we use
- made life even lower maintenance
- finished and not renewed a number of contracts
- streamlined the clients I have retained and what I will do for them
By far the biggest benefit though has been the identification of a single project to focus on that will provide the need, motivation, time and funds to really ‘give it a go’!
But for now I am going to enjoy my day. As ever no plans ……. may go and get some lunch later, or buy some food to cook at home, or pop out for a drink. On the basis that 50 is the new 40, that makes me 36 today, so I think I will accept that and get on with correcting what in reality are minor frustrations.
