Almerimar - Gastronomic Event

March 1st, 2008 - Sandra Marshall

Yesterday a friend and I took a walk down to the port for a coffee and to check out the Gastronomic event. I have to admit to being a little confused as to exactly what I was going to as, apart from a very pleasant picture of some cooked vegetables, the poster didn’t give much away!

The event was inside what used to be the cafe/bar of the old Sol Apartments, and on stepping inside we were confronted by what looked like a vegetable stall, apart from the fact all the veggies were in sealed boxes. I actually thought a lot of them looked so much nicer than the ones we buy at the Mercadona that I was getting a little excited. But they were not for sale and nobody was around to give us any more information, so hopes of finding a new source of fresher more delicious veggies faded.

There were quite a few people inside chatting, having a beer and eating nibbles, but I was still confused as to what this was all about. I then spotted Viviene at what appeared to be a reception desk. She sold us tickets for 1€ for drinks at the bar, explained the tapas was being brought out on big plates and to just grab some and try it, and gave us free little recipe books in Spanish and English. This was all very civilised but I STILL didn’t quite get it!

Anyway we got ourselves a drink, and wandered over to the tables area for a chat and to start sampling the food. I tried some very good ‘Whitebait Lookalike’ made from very thin strips of deep fried courgette (preferable to whitebait in my view but I know Chris wouldn’t agree), then had some grilled peppers, fresh tomato in oil, some lovely little tostatas with mixed veggies on top, and finished up with some sweet but definitely interesting honeyed (i think) cucumber. I enjoyed it all but then I love vegetables, and I was impressed that the food was all free and not dependent on how many drinks you bought, although a little hit and miss as to what you managed to grab!

SO what was it all about? Basically it was a promotion for the vegetables of the region, and the little cookery book was produced by the Agriculture and Environment Dept of the Council in El Ejido. OK all very good but I remain confused as to how this has helped generate trade for the businesses of Almerimar, namely the restaurants, bars, etc. which is the remit of the ‘Foro’ that organised it.

One suggestion was that the aim was to attract people to Almerimar to go to the event, but it was far too small to warrant that, as apart from some face painting and balloon bending for kids outside, and some music, what I have described was it. In addition it didn’t seem to have been publicised very well. A much bigger event with genuine vegetable stalls, cooking displays by the local restaurants (only one of which had submitted a recipe) etc. may have worked as a better attraction.

Overall I enjoyed my drink and veggie tapas, quite like my little recipe book ( a lot of the recipes are very dinner-party), and think it was a good initiative that people had put effort into. However I left feeling it could have been so much more and wondering what it had achieved.

Well I guess getting people out and about was an aim, and it seems like it achieved that? Maybe people stayed down in the marina for coffee, tapas etc.

While it is reassuring to see that this type of event is set up with good intention in order to help with a sense of community spirit and participation, I can’t help feeling that, as you say, an opportunity has been missed that could have involved so many more interested and viable stakeholders. It sounds like the more reticent among us would have been in two minds whether to ’step over the threshold’.

However, let us hope that it was deemed enough of a success for there to be some more of these events (or some with different themes) in order to attract business and economy into the port and surrounding area.

    Venga!

I went to a meeting of the Foro in December and they were planning a number of different events throughout 2008. Around one a month in the quiet times and a lot in July/August.

January was windsurfing. Feb this event. Not sure for the rest of the year but at the meeting I went to there was talk of holding a wine tasting event at some point.

One issue I have is the lack of timely promotion of events. All the promotion and advertising takes place at the last minute rather than a rolling programme of events being published well in advance.

For example, at the meeting I went to in December they were talking about this gastronomic event taking place at the end of February. But the posters for the event only started being displayed in Almerimar a few days before it took place.

I have to agree that it was a pleasant enough event but there was insufficient going on to really attract people in. Anyone walking past seemed to pop in but beyond the confines of Darsena 2 I doubt anyone knew it was happening. Like you I was confused as to its objective. A good idea but maybe they need help with the execution and marketing?

  5. Chris Marshall Says:

Well that is part of the charm about Almerimar though - the village fete type of approach :-)

I agree it is all very amateur but lets not lose track of the fact that they are trying and need to be applauded and encouraged in that. The other side of the equation is that people here have a tendancy to be apathetic and moan that nothing is arranged, but don’t participate when it is.

Now of course they could use the blog more to promote - but that may take a while for them to get their minds round as well!!!

  6. Alberto Says:

I agree with everything said here so far. Only one correction to Sandra: the Foro was not created to help local business, that is only a conclusion of the action. The main focus of the Foro is to be opened to everybody(business and neighbours) in Almerimar to help create more activities around. Last time I saw you, everyone agreed how “dead” Almerimar is, so between all of us, we should try to give a bit more of “life” to Almerimar!

  7. Chris Marshall Says:

Well the Foro may need to get their PR and Marketing kicked up a notch then as they have certainly always given that impression in the meetings and dealing I have had with them, and I would say that it pretty much the general perception.

I think that what they are trying to do is 100% the right thing, and I think the more variety they can provide the better.

Again, more life would be good - before it becomes the ‘Kiss of Life’ :-)

Have said before, if the Foro want to take advantage of the blog and send stuff through to promote events they (like everyone else) are more than welcome …….

Anything we can do to help we will happily try and do …..

  8. Francis Says:

Well, it certainly seems as though the intention is there. I hope the dialogue is soon to follow.
At last, I have been able to book some flights for the Easter weekend. I believe that I owe a small donation to the ‘fund’. I will hopefully be able to pass this on directly when I am there (21st - 24th March).
Who knows, perhaps over a cup of coffee?

Keep up all the hard work. I know it is well appreciated.

    Mucha Suerte.

  9. John W Says:

Getting the Foro to use English language websites to promote events in advance has proved difficult so far.

I have offered free entries in the event calendar on almerimar24.com and free promotional articles on the site on a number of occasions with no response. I have also said that I could look to try to arrange the same for this site.

    Maybe something will happen eventually.

    John
