Almerimar Feature - A day with the Long Way Round boys

March 11th, 2008 - Chris Marshall

On Sunday I spent the day with the boys from The Way Round Andalucia. It was partly an opportunity to see their set up in operation, and partly a good reason for a day out in the mountains with the camera.

First up, the team! I spent most of the day in the company of Big Chris, who has a career track record spanning endurance racing, team management, training and property development. What he doesn’t know about the sport I guess isn’t worth knowing - well at least I wouldn’t challenge him as he is a big guy, with what can only be described as a ‘huge character’. If all else fails I reckon they could make money just charging for the time spent driving round with Chris as he has certainly got to know the area, Junta, farmers etc incredibly well.

Next up is Kris, who does all the lead riding and has a great Welsh wit, and as far as I could tell a good way with the riders. He certainly knows his way around the off road routes.

Last, but my no means least is Guinea with his West Country ‘charm’, languid style, and ability to drink anyone under the table.

Together they make a formidable, amicable and thoroughly professional team.

That was what impressed me most, the professionalism behind the set up, from the research, through the investment in quality bikes and spares, to the thought behind the actual days and routes.

On Sunday I joined up with three customers, Nigel, Skip and Frank, and in between the laughter at Frank’s latest ‘incident’ and the serious concentration on developing their riding skills they said several times how much they had enjoyed the two days, and that they would be back. This seems to be a common theme already with the early clients as many have referred their friends, and many are booked to come back already.

Of course a day up in the mountains with beer and tapas for lunch in an amazing local bar in Ujicar is always a great day. Throw in the quality riding and you have a great day that just got better. Add in the company and you just about have perfection.

Great pictures! Actually ended up having a drink with the boys in the port right at the end of the day, and they definitely seemed to have had a fantastic time.
