Addicted To Golf In Almerimar

October 30th, 2008 - Addicted To Golf

Hi my name is (actually that isn’t important and better not stated) but I am a golf addict. If I am not playing golf I am watching golf, or talking about it, or reading about it, and now …….. writing about it!

I have thought about setting up my own blog dedicated solely to golf, but to be honest I can’t be bothered, would much rather be playing, or watching, or discussing, or reading ……. I still think that there is a niche for a quality site just about golf in Almerimar. At the moment there are a number of individual sites that cater very well for their own groups, cliques, societies etc. but nothing that covers them all.

I was discussing this with Chris a while back as I knew he used to play but didn’t bother anymore, and I knew that he provided golf information and reviews, and I suggested that as I played with pretty much every group, clique and society here in Almerimar at one time or another I would be well positioned to give some ad hoc, (in)frequent information on this site.

He agreed so here you go ………. my first attempt at blogging (with some help and thanks to Chris for editing)

Having played the course recently I can say that it is in much better condition than it was in September:

  • Tees – pretty good 8/10
  • Fairways – generally good with short grass and only the 16th showing many bare patches 7/10
  • Rough – not tough enough! Serioulsy the firstt cut is very short and the second cut too variable to be fair 5/10
  • Greens – the srrrounds are better than they were, but still a number of bare patches 6/10
  • Bunkers – best I can say is that they haven’t got any worse, but they really aren’t good. To many weeds, bare patches and overall poor maintenance (as much by the golfers as the green staff) 4/10

The problem regards the top dressing of the greens remains and although they have worked hard and pretty much all of them are playable (think the 9th, 10th and 12th are by far the worst), overall they are very lush, slow and untrue.

There has been a lot of fun activity recently and plenty of opportunities to get out on the course. The Tarleton Week was pretty good, but not as good as last year.I think it really suffered because of the poor condition of the course and having to play other courses. The Tuesday and Friday golf is back, but not the same as it used to be since the falling out with La Plaza. It is funny but all the people that used to go after the golf still go (with a couple of notable exceptions), so we still tend to meet up from time to time with ‘old friends’. The guys are planning a Xmas Competition and dinner so if you want I am sure the organisers would be more than happy for you to email them. I have also been playing a bit on a Tuesday morning as well, but we could do with a few more regulars so if you are interested please email me via this blog and Chris will forward on your details and get back to you on my behalf.

Now, enough of this writing lark. Playing tomorrow, so hopefully this wind will die down a bit ….
