One piece of advice we have been given for understanding more Spanish is to watch Spanish TV with the subtitles for the deaf switched on. Not much good for practicing speaking but great for helping with listening and spelling. Also, seeing the words in context with what was happening on the screen seemed to help.

When we first came over we found an afternoon soap opera and watched it every weekday for a year or so. The series finished so we got out of the habit a while ago. However, a few weeks ago I tried it again and was amazed how much more I understood compared to a year ago.
